Our Mission
Earth Matters Foundation believes that people protect what they understand and love, and that stories are how understanding begins. We use storytelling to make science and nature accessible to the public and to turn awareness into care. We build a lasting ecosystem of environmental and wildlife documentary filmmakers across Asia, informed by scientists and conservationists, give them a platform and access to industry, and stand with community-led work in India, so that the stories of our environment keep being told.
Stories that move people to protect the planet.
Today, our work centres on building a stronger ecosystem for environmental and wildlife documentary in Asia. Greenstories, launched in 2024 with Dusty Foot Foundation and Documentary Resource Initiative, incubates and mentors filmmakers and gives them a pitching platform to reach industry. Scientists and conservationists in the wider community share their knowledge so the stories are accurate and grounded. In India, we also collaborate with community-led projects, supporting the work they already do.

What We Do

Greenstories
An incubation, mentorship and pitching forum launched in 2024 in partnership with Dusty Foot Foundation and Documentary Resource Initiative. An ecosystem of environmental filmmakers in Asia, with mentoring, a platform, and access to industry. Scientists and conservationists in the wider community help inform their stories.

Films That Made a Difference
Films from the Riverbank Studios archive that helped shape wildlife protection in India and beyond, from national legislation to international conservation negotiations. The creative impulse at Riverbanks is driven by the need to work on ideas that are dynamic and socially and environmentally responsible.

Community Partnerships: Pabhoi Greens
An ongoing partnership with Pabhoi Greens on indigenous seed saving and organic farming, with training and awareness programmes for villagers in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Fields of Gold, a documentary produced by Riverbank Studios and directed by Doel Trivedy, is now in production and will carry impact work with Pabhoi around farmers’ heirloom seeds.

Elephants and Villages: Chhattisgarh
In [2008–09], with the support of WWF India and the Chhattisgarh Forest Department, Earth Matters Foundation spent six months studying human-elephant conflict across five northern districts of Chhattisgarh. We surveyed 324 villages, mapped conflict sites with GPS, and produced an action plan for the state.

Dudhsagar–Khandepar Chronicles
A community river project in Goa, with Bookworm Trust, Goa University, the Goa Forest Department and The Foundation for Rivers and Ecosystems. Building on a 2022 reconnaissance survey, the team surveyed the plants along 40 km of the Khandepar, from the Dudhsagar falls to the mangroves, and worked with villagers and village libraries in Opa on plant walks, herbarium-making and zines. The work is currently paused for lack of funding. The goal is to restore the river’s flood-buffering forest over 5–10 years. We are looking for support to continue it.
